Annakut (Govardhan Puja)

Annakut — Govardhan Puja — falls on Kartik Shukla Pratipada, Kartak sud Ekam, the Gujarati new year, the morning after Diwali. It commemorates the leela at the heart of Pushtimarg. Young Shri Krishna persuaded Nandbaba and the Vrajvasis to set aside the yagna to Indra and instead worship Girirāj Govardhan — the hill that fed their cows and sheltered their lives. Vraj brought its whole harvest, a mountain of food, and Prabhu himself, manifesting from the hill in vast form, declared that he was Govardhan and accepted it all. Indra, enraged, loosed seven days of torrential rain — and Shri Krishna lifted Govardhan on the little finger of his left hand, holding it as an umbrella over all Vraj until Indra bowed.

Shrinathji IS this svarup: Govardhandhari, the left arm raised, revealed from the Girirāj itself. So Annakut is the utsav of Shrinathji's own leela — the most iconic utsav of the sampradaya. In its darshan a literal mountain rises before Prabhu: cooked rice heaped high, ringed by chhappan bhog and countless sakhdi and ansakhdi samagri. At Nathdwara the annakut is vast beyond counting, and by cherished tradition the gaushala's cows are let in over the rice — Girirāj's own cows taking Prabhu's prasad first.

If one darshan holds the whole of Pushtimarg, it is Annakut. In the leela, Shri Krishna turned Vraj's worship away from a distant, powerful deva toward what was near, nurturing and their own — and then revealed that he himself is the one who receives all worship. That is the marg's foundation: not fear, not bargaining, but love served to a Prabhu who is present. The mountain of food answers the mountain he carried: Vraj offered everything it had, and Prabhu held up everything they were.

To stand before the annakut darshan — Prabhu with his raised arm, and before him a whole year's abundance heaped in gratitude — is to see grace and offering face one another. For a Vaishnav the bhav is simple and immense: everything we have grew in his shade, so the new year's first act is to lay it all at his feet. Seva of Shrinathji is seva of Girirāj Govardhan himself. And as the utsav's overflowing thals teach, what is offered to Prabhu returns as prasad — multiplied, sweetened, and enough for all.
