Shri Mahaprabhuji Pragatya Utsav
What it is
This is the appearance day of Shri Vallabhacharya Mahaprabhuji (1479–1531), the founder of Pushtimarg and, for every Vaishnav, the doorway to Prabhu's grace. He appeared in Samvat 1535 (1479 CE) on Vaishakh Krishna Ekadashi — the sacred Varuthini Ekadashi, counted as Chaitra Vad 11 in the Gujarati calendar — at Champaranya, in the forests of present-day Chhattisgarh. His parents, Shri Lakshman Bhatt and Mata Illammagaru, a devout Telugu Brahmin couple, were travelling from Kashi amid unrest when the child was born before his time beneath a shami tree. Believing him lifeless, the grieving parents wrapped him in cloth and placed him in the hollow of the tree.
That night a divine intimation told them their son lived; returning, they found the infant safe and radiant, cradled in a ring of fire that parted to let his mother take him up. He is therefore revered as Vaishvanaravatar — the embodiment of divine fire — and as the mukhavatar, the very face of Shri Krishna. He would go on to expound the Shuddhadvaita philosophy, receive the Brahmasambandh mantra from Shrinathji himself at Gokul, journey three times around India on foot, and establish the 84 baithaks where he recited the Shrimad Bhagavat.
Why we observe it
Without Shri Mahaprabhuji there is no Pushtimarg: no brahmasambandh, no seva, no path by which an ordinary jiva may serve Shri Krishna with nothing but love. His Pragatya Utsav is therefore among the most cherished days of the whole year. Mahaprabhuji taught that Prabhu is attained not by merit, austerity or scholarship but by pushti — grace freely given — and that the jiva's part is simply samarpan: 'Shri Krishnah sharanam mama', Shri Krishna is my refuge. It was he who stood before Prabhu with the anguish of fallen jivas in his heart, and was answered with the gift of Brahmasambandh — a door that stands open for every Vaishnav to this day.
On this day havelis and baithaks overflow with utsav: panchamrut snan, vadhaai and kirtans of his pragatya, readings from his granths such as the Shodash Granth and Subodhini, with the Varuthini Ekadashi vrat observed alongside. Vaishnavs remember the fire at Champaranya and understand that the warmth of their own seva was first lit there. It is a day of gratitude and of rededication: to serve Thakorji with the bhav Mahaprabhuji revealed, and to live a life worthy of the marg of grace.
