Papmochini Ekadashi

What it is

Papmochini Ekadashi arrives as the colours of Holi are fading — on Fagan vad Agiyaras by the Gujarati reckoning, the Krishna Paksha Ekadashi that North Indian calendars place in Chaitra. Her name says everything: pap, sin, and mochini, she who releases.

The Bhavishyottara Purana tells her katha, narrated by Lomasha Rishi and retold by Shri Krishna to Yudhishthira. In the lovely Chaitraratha forest, the young rishi Medhavi, son of Chyavana, sat in deep tapas. The apsara Manjughosha was sent to break it; her veena and her beauty succeeded, and years passed for the rishi like a single evening. When at last he woke to what was lost, his anger flared and he cursed her to become a pishachini — and then felt the weight of his own fall no less than hers. Guided by his father, both kept the vrat of this Ekadashi: Manjughosha was freed from her dreadful form and rose again radiant, and Medhavi's tapas and peace returned. Kept with fasting, worship and honest remembrance, this tithi is honoured as washing away even sins long carried — and the regret that clings to them.

Why we observe it

Papmochini Ekadashi exists because everyone falls — even a rishi in a forest of tapas — and because falling is not the end of the story. Its placement is gentle wisdom in itself: after the festival, when celebration has run its course and the heart turns quiet, comes a day for washing the heart. In Pushtimarg this cleansing is understood through grace, not self-punishment: a Vaishnav does not carry guilt as luggage, but lays it at Prabhu's feet the way a child brings a broken thing to its mother — hiding nothing, keeping nothing back.

The day is kept with upvas, with the smaran of Shrinathji, and with honest inward looking: naming what went wrong without despair, asking without bargaining. And notice that the katha is careful to free both the tempted and the tempter — teaching us to release others from our anger even as we ask release for ourselves. The phal is the lightest of all feelings, a conscience made clean, and a fresh heart ready for the new brightness of Chaitra.
