Prabodhini (Devuthani) Ekadashi
What it is
Prabodhini — Devuthani — Ekadashi falls on Kartak Sud 11, and it is one of the great hinges of the Vaishnav year. On Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadh the Lord reclined into Yoga-nidra; today he awakens — 'prabodh' means awakening. With this day the four months of Chaturmas are complete.
The day is inseparable from Tulsi Vivah: from this Ekadashi up to Kartik Poonam, the sacred wedding of Tulsiji with the Lord is celebrated in temples and homes. Tulsiji — most beloved of Prabhu, without whose leaf no offering is complete — is given to him in marriage like a daughter of the house, with all the songs and sweetness of a family wedding. And because the devas are awake again, every auspicious beginning resumes: this day opens the marriage season, and vivahs, griha-pravesh and new undertakings fill the months that follow.
Coming soon after Annakut, in Kartik's most sacred stretch, Prabodhini is counted among the most important Ekadashis of the year — the day devotees lovingly call to the Lord in kirtan and stuti: awaken, Prabhu, and look upon your devotees.
Why we observe it
Chaturmas was four months of niyam — things given up, extra seva taken on, katha and kirtan attended, the monsoon months turned inward. Prabodhini is that discipline's joyous fulfilment: today, whatever was kept through the four months is brought and placed at Prabhu's feet.
But the Lord of the whole universe does not truly sleep. The deeper meaning of Devuthani is that the awakening asked for is our own — as we sing to wake the Lord, the real prayer is that bhav may wake in our heart, that seva may stop being routine and become alive again. In Pushtimarg the whole Chaturmas is a garland of utsavs — Hindola, Janmashtami, Dashera, Diwali, Annakut — and Prabodhini closes the garland with Tulsi Vivah's tenderness. Tulsiji's marriage teaches the bhav of complete self-offering: to belong to Prabhu entirely, holding nothing back — the very heart of atma-nivedan.
From today, new beginnings are auspicious again. The Vaishnav begins them the only way beginnings should be begun: with Prabhu's smaran, and his name on the lips.
