Jaya Ekadashi

What it is

Jaya Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of Maha — Maha sud Agiyaras, the Shukla Paksha of Magha. Its katha, told by Shri Krishna to Yudhishthira in the Padma Purana, begins in Indra's heavenly court. The gandharva Malyavan was singing and the apsara Pushpavati dancing, but their hearts had strayed into each other; the sur faltered, the taal broke, and the song offered to the assembly fell apart. For that distraction Indra cursed them to wander the Himalaya as pishachas — ghostly, hungry, sleepless.

In that misery, on this very Ekadashi, they happened to eat almost nothing and passed the whole freezing night awake, weeping together under a peepal tree. Without knowing it, they had kept the fast and the jagran. At dawn the Lord's grace lifted the curse; their divine forms returned and they rose to the heavens, radiant. Hence the name Jaya — she who grants victory. This Ekadashi is honoured as freeing even those trapped in the darkest of states, the bhoot-preta yoni, and as destroying the gravest of sins.

Why we observe it

For a Pushtimarg Vaishnav this katha lands very close to home, because singing before the Lord is the heart of our seva. Malyavan's fall was not a wrong note — it was a wandering heart; the music continued but the bhav had left it. Jaya Ekadashi reminds us that Prabhu listens not to the voice but to the attention of the heart, and that whatever we bring before Him — kirtan, food, flowers, work — is measured by where the mind rests while we offer it.

And yet the same story carries immense hope: a vrat kept unknowingly, in misery, still had the power to turn pishachas back into devas. If an accidental fast can do so much, what can a fast kept in love not do? So the Vaishnav keeps this day in upvas and unbroken smaran of Shrinathji, singing with the whole heart present. The phal the shastras name — victory over sin, and release even for departed souls when the merit is offered for them — begins with the smaller, daily victory over the restless mind.
